Indeterminacy 67

In 1952 I was
asked to write a manifesto
about
new music.
I wrote,

“Instantaneous and unpredictable.”
Then
below I wrote,
“Nothing is accomplished
by writing a piece of music.
Ditto
for hearing a piece of music.
Ditto
for playing a piece of music.”

Then there was a bracket
and the words,
“Our ears
are now in excellent condition.”

My signature
followed and
that was all there was to it.
