Opening Night (1977)

An actress suffers a personal breakdown in her personal life after a fan dies trying to see her.

A tour de force with a formidable Gena Rowlands performing the downward spiral with perfection. The movie itself is staged in a semi-documentary style with no fancy camera work or settings.

This is an amazing movie. I really should revisit this one, since it's been years, but I remember being absolutely blown away by Rowlands' performance, which exists within a loose, ragged framework so that the film seemed to be dancing around her strong center.

I can agree with that! I still need to see A Woman Under the Influence where she supposedly delivers a similarly stellar performance.
