Johan (1921)

On a farm in up-country Sweden, an enigmatic stranger comes to a conservative peasant community and seduces a farmer's wife.

This is a lesser known movie by classic silent director Mauritz Stiller. Told like an indigenous folk tale the passions of the characters in the love triangle are echoed in the landscapes depicted, especially the woman's turmoil on the river's rapids.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find any good stills from the movie. The picture above is from the DVD edition which also include's Aki Kauriskäki's remake, a movie I have yet to see.
