Dinosaur Jr - Little Fury Things

Dinosaur Jr are one of my alltime favourite bands, of course, and this my favourite song. I also got to see them live sometime in the late 80s, what a concert! And guess who was support? A then still unkown band called My Bloody Valentine!!!
I'm getting nostalgic...

At he bottom an 'unplugged' version with Lee Ranaldo:-)

What is it?
Who is it?
Where is it?

A rabbit falls away from me, I guess Ill crawl
A rabbit always smashes me, again Ill crawl
Tried to think whats over me, it makes me crawl
Then she runs away from me, faster than I crawl
I stopped to call, tried to feel it all
Stuck my hand and pulled real hard
Got stretch in miles, not in yards
Then I read, about all those who believe all of your lies
Sunlight brings the rage right in your eyes

A rabbit falls away from me, I guess Ill crawl
A rabbit always smashes me, again Ill crawl
Tried to think whats over me, it makes me crawl
Then she runs away from me, faster than I crawl

A rabbit falls away from me, I guess Ill crawl
A rabbit always smashes me, again Ill crawl
Tried to think whats over me, it makes me crawl
Then she runs away from me, faster than I crawl

While hunting morels with
Alexander Smith in the
woods near Ann Arbor,
I mentioned
having found quantities of
Lactarius deliciosus in the
woods in northern Vermont.
said, “Were
the stipes viscid?”
I said,
“Yes, they were.” He
said, “It’s
not deliciosus; it’s thyinos.”
He went on to
say that people go through
their entire lives thinking
that things are that when
they are actually this,
and that
these mistakes are necessarily
made with the
very things with which they
are the most familiar.

Sharkwater (2006)

Superb documentary done with great personal passion. Sharks have always been my favourites, too; as a kid I used to draw hammerhead sharks a lot.

A Song a Day

PJ Harvey & John Parish - Black Hearted Love

I just had to mention that the new album is magnificent!

I think I saw you in the shadows
I move in closer beneath your windows
Who would suspect me of this rapture?

And who but my black hearted love
And who but my black hearted love

When you call out my name in rapture
I volunteer my soul for murder
I wish this moment here forever

And you are my black hearted love
And you are my black hearted love
In the rain, in the evening I will come again

I'd like to take you;
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you;
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you;
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted
I'd like to take you;
I'd like to take you to a place I know
My black hearted

Sonya Sekula said, “Why don’t you come with me to the Reises’?
They’re giving a party.” I said I wasn’t invited. Sonya said,
“Come anyway; they won’t mind.” As we walked in, Mrs. Reis was
extremely friendly in her greeting, and even asked what I’d like
to drink. I said, “Rum.” She said, “Oh, I’m so sorry. I don’t
have any at the bar, but I’ll go down to the basement and get
some.” I asked her not to bother, but she insisted. While she
was gone, I made my way over to the bar and discovered Bushmills
Irish whisky, of which I am very fond. I asked for some and began
drinking it. When Mrs. Reis came back with the rum, naturally
I drank some of that. As the time passed, I drank rum when Mrs.
Reis was looking and Irish whisky when she wasn’t. After a while
Sonya Sekula said, “Let’s go. You take one of the bottles of
Irish and I’ll get my coat and meet you downstairs.” I said, “You
take the bottle; I’ll get your coat.” She said, “O.K.” I went
downstairs, picked up a fur coat; Sonya came running down with
the Irish; we went out into the snow. I said, “Do you want your
coat on?” She said, “No. The car’s right here. Just throw it in
the back seat.” A few blocks along, Sonya said, “That’s not my
coat.” I said, “How do you know?” She said, “The perfume.” We
drove on to Grand Street, went upstairs, and killed the Irish.
We talked all the time about selling the coat in some distant
city. Sonya said she knew a fence in St. Louis. About midnight
I called the Reises and spoke to Mr. Reis. I said, “I have the
coat.” He said, “Thank God!” We made arrangements for my
bringing it to his office in the morning. When I got there I
explained it had all been a mistake. Before we said good-by, he
whispered, “No one will ever hear a word about this.” I went to
the elevator. He came running down the hall and said, “What about
Mrs. Reis’s coat?” I said, “I don’t know anything about her coat;
I didn’t take it.”

Vignettes #12

Quite a few years ago - I still had my own car - Ursula and I decided to take a drive around the countryside outside of town. It was a bright, sunny and warm summer afternoon, and we had time. The plan was to drive around and take in the scenery and afterwards stop at a village tavern for something to eat. We had heard of one place in the village of Penk in the Naab valley that was supposed to have a pretty beer garden and good food and beer.

We were told that it was on the valley road just outside the village, so if you find yourself in Penk you have accidentally passed the place. So we enjoyed our drive and just before arriving the village we saw a beer garden and stopped there. However, it wasn't pretty at all, more like the hole in the wall of a barn and maybe 3-4 tables outside. Well, we decided to try it anyway.

Besides us there was only one more table occupied, a group of maybe 5-6 men, obviously locals, probably farmers. They were having their usual rounds of beer and some chat and having a good time. Ursula and I ordered, I had a schnitzel and a pint of beer, and although it wasn't such a nice place, we did have a view of the valley and the river, and besides it was shady. You could also overview the road more than a mile in each direction and the fields located all along the valley. There was hardly any traffic.

At one point you could see a tractor approaching, it was about a mile away, and you could distinctly hear the sound of the vehicle. The guys at the other table changed the subject of their conversation. "That's Tony, I know the sound of his tractor!" one guy said. A lively discussion started on how to distinguish the local farmers by the sound of their tractors. Someone disagreed about Tony approaching, but most of the guys agreed.

So finally the tractor arrived and passed the beer garden, the guys cheered "Tony, what are you working on a day like this?" and the driver shouted back what he was doing - I forget exactly what it was - all this in passing. After a minute or two he was gone, but you could hear his tractor rattling for a while longer.

We paid and left when we were finished with our meals, and driving toward the village we noticed a huge and pretty beer garden, jam-packed with guests obviously all out-of-towners enjoying the day. To this day we never did try out that recommended place.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

Der Fangschuß (1976)

A bit too pedestrian, this is still one of Schlöndorff's better works, although I'm not a a fan of his. All his movies (as far as I know) are literary adaptations, in this case it was Marguerite Yourcenar's novel.

Kim Lemanton

Vals Im Bashir (2008)

A magnificent animated documentary not only dealing with a historic topic, but also exploring the complexity of remembering and delusion and collective guilt.

However, to come
back to my story.
A girl in the college
there came back backstage afterward
and told me that something
marvelous had happened.
I said, “What?”
She said, “One
of the music majors is thinking
for the first time in her
life.” Then at dinner (it
had been an afternoon concert),
the Head of
the Music Department told me
that as he was
leaving the concert hall,
three of his students
called, saying,
“Come over
here.” He went over.
“What is
it?” he said.
One of the girls
said, “Listen.”

Sonic Youth - Schizophrenia

I went away to see an old friend of mine
His sister came over she was out of her mind
She said jesus had a twin who knew nothing about sin
She was laughing like crazy at the trouble Im in
Her light eyes were dancing she is insane
Her brother says shes just a bitch with a golden chain
She keeps coming closer saying I can feel it in my bones
Schizophrenia is taking me home

My future is static
Its already had it
I could tuck you in
And we can talk about it
I had a dream
And it split the scene
But I got a hunch
Its coming back to me

After a long and arduous journey a
young Japanese man arrived deep in
a forest where the teacher of his
choice was living in a small house he
had made. When the
student arrived, the teacher
was sweeping up fallen leaves.
Greeting his master,
the young man received no greeting
in return. And to
all his questions, there
were no replies.
Realizing there was nothing he could do
to get the teacher’s attention,
the student went to another part
of the same forest and built
himself a house.
Years later, when he
was sweeping up fallen leaves,
he was enlightened.
He then dropped everything,
ran through the forest
to his teacher, and
said, “Thank you.”
