March 1912. "Row of tenements, 260 to 268 Elizabeth St., New York, in which a great deal of finishing of clothes is carried on." 268 Elizabeth Street, in Little Italy, is now a "luxe sweater bar" called Sample; 258 (Kips Bay) is a handbag boutique called Token. Vignettes #60

A friend of mine has 2 sons, the oldest one is attending 3rd grade elementary school. Recently my pal got a phone call by an irate priest who was giving his son lessons to prepare him for first communion. Obviously, his son had called the priest a 'Spatzerlhirn' which is a Bavarian expression, literally a 'sparrow's brain'. I don't think it needs any explanation. So while my friend politely aplogized for his son's behaviour, he was in fact quite proud of his boy.

First Lines: Vladimir Nabokov - Pnin

The elderly passenger sitting on the north-window side of that inexorably moving railway coach, next to an empty seat and facing two empty ones, was none other than Professor Timofey Pnin.

Kristina Romanova

Spellbound (1945)

A female psychiatrist protects the identity of an amnesia patient accused of murder while attempting to recover his memory.

Classic Hitchcock thriller with a famous dream sequence, the plot is quite construed, though.

New Stuff: Vladimir Nabokov

I must admit so far I have missed out on reading any of his his books.

Anna Zanovello

The Watcher (2000)

A detective tracking a serial killer gives up all hope of solving the crimes and moves to another city.

Haphazard crime thriller that hardly misses a cliche.

A Walk in the Clouds (1995)

After returning from the war a soldier and a young woman meet on a bus as she's headed home from college to help with the grape harvest and face her Old World domineering dad.

Schmaltzy melodrama, everything made in such good taste so that it can't disguise the fakeness of it all.
