A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)

A highly advanced robotic boy longs to become "real" so that he can regain the love of his human mother.

Wonderful sci-fi fairy tale with a bleak vision of mankind and a fascinating view of a distant future world.

Halliwell *: "Overlong, often spectacular, but fuzzy updating of the story of Pinocchio. Beneath its surface gloss, and sentimental whimsy, there is a darker theme of the end of humankind: the narrative equates love with biological imprinting and prefers mechanical fantasy to messier humanity."

Maltin **: "Intriguing story draws us in, thanks in part to Osments exceptional performance, but takes several wrong turns: ultimately, it just doesn't work. Spielberg rewrote the adaptation Stanley Kubrick commissioned of the Brian Aldiss story "SuperToys Last All Summer Long"; result is a curious and uncomfortable hybrid of Kubrick and Spielberg sensibilities."
