Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

An African American mafia hit man who models himself after the samurai of old finds himself targeted for death by the mob.

A self-referential gangster movie with all the director's typical elements: great acting, laconic narrative interspersed with humor and some ironically spiced depth.

Halliwell***: "A film that is likely to divide audiences: some will find its literary structure pretentious, others will enjoy a slyly comic movie about a clash between two different codes of honour."

Maltin***: "Typically original (though sometimes pretentious) Jarmusch mix of mysticism, action, and even comedy, anchored by Whitaker's quiet, intense performance. Very bloody at times, and not for all tastes."
