The Usual Suspects (1995)

A sole survivor tells of the twisty events leading up to a horrific gun battle on a boat, which begin when five criminals meet at a seemingly random police lineup.

Top-notch crime thriller as a riddle: what at first seems like a regular heist story makes so many twist and turns and still manages to surprise with an unexpected ending - an instant classic.

Halliwell***: "Excellent, gripping thriller that plays tricks with its audience, leading it one blind alley after another, dealing in deliberate confusion and double-cross. Its refusal to come clean until its final revelation may infuriate some, but it is part of its appeal, aided by some nicely edgy performances from the actors."

Maltin**1/2: "Terrific cast makes the most of Christopher McQuarrie's intriguing, Oscar-winning, but convoluted script. (If you think about it, the final twist negates the entire film!) Highly praised, but to our minds, too "clever" for its own good."
