Le quai des brumes (1938)

A military deserter finds love and trouble (and a small dog) in a smoky French port city.

Very atmospheric existentialist drama with spectacular b/w photography, rightfully considered a classic.

Halliwell***: "Artificial, set-bound, but at the time wholly persuasive melodrama which became one of the archetypal French films of the thirties, its doomed lovers syndrome not being picked up by Hollywood until after World War II."
