First Lines: Edgar Allan Poe - The Murders in the Rue Morgue

The mental features discoursed of as the analytical, are, in themselves, but little susceptible of analysis.

A girl carrying kimonos. Thompson St, February 1912

First Lines: Jonathan Lethem - The Fortress of Solitude

Like a match struck in a darkened room:
Two white girls in flannel nightgowns and red vinyl roller skates with white laces, tracing tentative circles on a cracked blue slate sidewalk at seven o'clock on an evening in July.

New Stuff: The Fall

Their highly acclaimed new album is great indeed!

New Stuff: Zola Jesus

I stumbled upon this artist by happenstance and thought I'd check out her dark ambient pop songs.

Troy (2004)

An adaptation of Homer's great epic, the film follows the assault on Troy by the united Greek forces and chronicles the fates of the men involved.

Bombastic, but somewhat stiff adaptation of the classic saga.

The Children of Huang Shi (2008)

About a young British journalist, who, with the assistance of a courageous Australian nurse, saves a group of orphaned children during the Japanese occupation of China in 1937.

Well made, but schmaltzy account of a true story.

Shrek the Third (2007)

Shrek recruits his friends to install the rebellious Artie as the new king.

Entertaining, but not so well plotted third installment of the series.

The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952)

A writer reflects on his life as he lies dying from an infection while on safari in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Elegant, but hopelessly outdated adaptaion of an Ernest Hemingway story.
