A futuristic love story in which the romance is doomed by genetic incompatibility.

Well-intentioned sci-fi melodrama which aims for an atmosphere of melancholy and doom, but is mostly tedious.

Maltin**: "Intriguing idea is terminally aloof and gives us no one to care about."


Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Child (2010)


Documentary of Jimi Hendrix' life.

Solid documentary that is mainly presented in Jimi Hendrix' own words, but in the end doesn't come up with any new facts. (The German version is blighted by having soft boy singer Xavier Nadoo dub Jimi's words.)


Searching for Sugar Man (2012)


Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s singer-songwriter, Rodriguez.

Fascinating documentary of something of a miracle, although some facts were omitted; in any case, Rodriguez wins by character and his wonderful songs.

Maltin***: "Compelling documentary...A so-incredible-it-must-be-true story doesn't provide as many answers about Rodriguez as one would like, but it's irresistable, with plenty of his songs and clever use of animation. It all leads to a satisfying and uplifting conclusion."

A day in the life, Dec 27, standing outside looking inside

Puss in Boots (2011)


The events leading up to the sword fighting cat's meeting with Shrek and his friends.

Enjoyable side trip to the Shrek series has its moments, but nothing really special.

Maltin**1/2: "Lively and masterfully staged, this makes great use of 3-D but gets to be a bit long and plot-heavy coming down the stretch. Puss, as voiced by Banderas, is essentially a one-joke character...but it's a pretty funny joke."

A day in the life, Dec 24, Dooley likes Christmas, too

A rag doll that awakens in a post-apocalyptic future holds the key to humanity's salvation.
 
Wonderfully animated and with some likable characters, but the plot is not that inspired.
 
Maltin**1/2: "Animated science-fiction yarn is imaginatively designed and well staged, but never becomes emotionally engaging as its too-familiar story plays out."
