A Bout de souffle (1960)

A young car thief kills a policeman and tries to persuade a girl to hide in Italy with him.

Highly innovative early Nouvelle Vague masterpiece turning a pulp gangster story into an avantgarde film experience, although the nervous jump-cut editing and the dislikable male hero are distracting.

Halliwell ****: "Casual, influential, New Wave reminiscence of both Quai des Brumes and innumerable American gangster thrillers. (The Film is dedicated to Monogram.) One of the first and most influential films of the French New Wave."

Maltin ***1/2: "Groundbreaking, influential New Wave tale with a classic romanticized gangster-hero and great candid shots of Paris life."
