New Stuff: Tina Modotti

I already one monograph on this photographer, but it's good to have another.

Boiling Point (1993)

A pair of sociopath killers take on the police and the mob in order to make one last big score.
Crime thriller intended more as character study than as suspenser; it has its monemts, but it's quite pedestrian and the plot goes on haphazardly.
Halliwell*: "Although promoted as an action film, this is more an engaging character study that hovers on the edge of cliche but manages to maintain its balance."
Maltin**: "Misnamed crime yarn is tepid at best, but well shot on L.A. locations, and filled with familiar faces."

Well, now I'm completing my Stanley Kubrick collection; it's been decades since I last seen this one.

New Stuff: Karlheinz Stockhausen

In a recent interview Diedrich Diedrichsen mentioned how enthusiastic he is about the Stockhausen composition Setz die Segel zur Sonne, so I got me this cd.

First Lines: Michael Chabon - The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

In later years, holding forth to an interviewer or to an audience of aging fans at a comic book convention, Sam Clay liked to declare, apropos of his and Joe Kavalier's greatest creation, that back when he was a boy, sealed and hog-tied inside the airtight vessel known as Brooklyn, New York, he had been haunted by dreams of Harry Houdini.
