Les orgueilleux (1953)

An alcoholic French doctor meets a guilt-ridden French widow in Mexico.

Heavy-handed Existentialist melodrama that does offer good local detail and a competent cast.

Halliwell (no star): "Ineffably silly, poorly acted and unconvincing romance."

First Lines: Philip K Dick - The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch

His head unnaturally aching, Barney Mayerson woke to find himself in an unfamiliar bedroom in an unfamiliar conapt building.

From my library: Gregor/Patalas - Geschichte des Films

Ulrich Gregor and Enno Patalas are the authors of THE German history of film. The project was first published in 1962 and in several volumes followed quite extensively the history of film and cinema. Over time the work was updated. I have the complete work plus volumes of all phases of the project. There is no other publication in German that has so far surpassed this history in scope and depth.

Alien: Resurrection (1997)

200 years after her death, Ellen Ripley is revived as a powerful human/Alien hybrid clone who must continue her war against the Aliens.

Too ambitious for its own good this installment of the Aliens series is quite messy, but has some moments, especially concerning the visuals.

On renewed viewing I need to correct my initial rating: this is actually an imaginative and at times quite disturbing new take on the Alien saga and, compared to the last installment, the plot is quite coherent.

Halliwell*: "Stylish, occassionally impressive movie that all too soon settles into familiar routine."

Maltin**: "Clumsy sequel with crummy logic, far too many wisecracks; a few good action scenes, but scrictly for series fans."
