It's a great little movie. Not the first film noir, but probably the first American film noir. (The 1937 British movie The Green Cockatoo precedes it, and also the 1938 French movie Port of Shadows).

Yes, now I've watched it and will post my miniature review tonight. I came upon this movie through the Wikipedia article on film noir which mentioned it considered the first by a stricter definition of the genre used by some critics.
