There is Wimpy, the orange-white cat, on a chair by the bed. If I shut the door to my room he whines and paws at the door. He isn't hungry. He just wants to be near me or near somebody who loves him. Billy used to do that in the house on Wagner Street in Algiers. He would cry outside my door until I opened it. And the house was a lot like this house, a plain white-frame house, long and narrow.
