The Ballad of Jack and Rose (2005)
A father and daughter isolated on an island off the East Coast and living on a once thriving commune grapple with the limits of family and sexuality.
Alternately gripping and bewildering this is -despite having a far-fetched premise - a never tedious character study thanks to an excellent cast and intelligent direction.
Maltin *1/2: "Pretentious claptrap...Attempt at an ethereal fable is clunky from the word go, despite the presence of such solid actors as Day-Lewis, husband of the film's writer-director."

Shoot Out (1971)
A former bank robber searches for his double crossing partner who left him for dead, while having to look after a 6 year old girl.
An old-fashioned Western pairing an old-school outlaw with a child has some lengths, but is fairly entertaining and offers some quite nasty villains.
Halliwell (no star): "Routine, flatly-handled revenge Western."
Maltin **: "Same producer, director and screenwriter of TRUE GRIT in another Western about cowboy and little girl. Formula doesn't work; in spite of title, film has too much talk and not enough action."
