First Lines: Oscar Hijuelos - Mr. Ives' Christmas

Years ago, in the 1950s, as a young man working for a Madison Avenue advertising agency, Ives always looked forward to the holiday season and would head out during his lunch hours, visiting churches, to think and meditate, and, if he was lucky, to hear the choirs as they practiced their hymns and sacred songs.

In Haddam, summer floats over tree-softened streets like a sweet lotion balm from a careless, languorous god, and the world falls in tune with its own mysterious anthems.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)

A lawyer takes on a negligent homicide case involving a priest who performed an exorcism on a young girl.

Good production value and a capable cast can't help a movie with a silly plot full of cliche-ridden horror scenes.

Maltin**: "Peculiar mix of horror movie and courtroom melodrama is unconvincing on all levels, though handsomely produced and well acted."
