Magellan (2017)

After NASA picks up a trio of mysterious signals from within our own solar system, astronaut Roger Nelson is dispatched on a multi-year solo mission aboard the Magellan spacecraft to investigate the sources.

Simple, yet watchable sci-fi drama with a plot not unlike 2001: A Space Odyssey offers some mediocre performances, but some good space photography and effective special effects.

Indignation (2016)

In 1951, Marcus, a working-class Jewish student from New Jersey, attends a small Ohio college, where he struggles with sexual repression and cultural disaffection, amid the ongoing Korean War.

Proper adaptation of the Philip Roth novel presents the tragedy in a calm, old-fashioned style with good period detail and an excellent cast.

I'm Your Woman (2020)

In the 1970s, a woman is forced to go on the run after her husband betrays his partners, sending her and her baby on a dangerous journey.

Above-average crime drama does a good job gradually revealing the details of its plot, with good period detail, smart direction and an excellent cast; Rachel Brosnahan is especially convincing in the title role.

Leave It to Beaver, Season 1 (1957)

The misadventures of a suburban boy, family and friends.

Charming and simple-minded comedy series depicts an idealized, if not always perfect vision of white American suburban life, far removed from any bigger national or global issues of the time.

His House (2020)

A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.

Extraordinary and unusual haunted house drama skillfully combines genre tropes with the refugee experience as strangers in a not so welcoming land.

Don't F**k with Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer (2019)

A group of online justice seekers track down a guy who posted a video of himself killing kittens.

Investigating a harrowing true crime this documentary focuses on the ambiguous role social media played in capturing the killer, but avoids taking a straight stance on the matter.

Sylvie's Love (2020)

When a young woman meets an aspiring saxophonist in her father's record shop in 1950s Harlem, their love ignites a sweeping romance that transcends changing times, geography, and professional success.

Wonderfully staged, old-fashioned love story is a joy to watch with great lead performances and a good eye for period details.
