Ad Astra (2019)

An astronaut undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.

Brad Pitt is magnificent as the calm, withdrawn astronaut in this visually striking sci-fi adventure, but the Daddy angle and its finale sure drags the whole experience down.

Armageddon (1998)

After discovering that an asteroid the size of Texas is going to impact Earth in less than a month, N.A.S.A. recruits a misfit team of deep core drillers to save the planet.

A classic doomsday premise executed with a big budget is ruined by a silly plot and a chaotic ending.

On renewed viewing: a bit more entertaining, if you don't take to too seriously.

Halliwell (no star): "Loud and brainless action movie that was among the top box-office successes of 1998."

Maltin**: "Opens with a bang, and sets up an exciting (if improbable) story...After a while it becomes so routine, so predictable, and so redundant that all the fun is drained away."

Robot & Frank (2012)

An ex-jewel thief receives a gift from his son: a robot butler programmed to look after him. But soon the two companions try their luck as a heist team.

Amiable sci-fi tale, very touchingly told with subdued humour.

Maltin***: "Quirky, low-key social satire with a sci-fi touch..."

The Strangers (2008)

A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants.

A standard horror film situation is done with style and some inventive and scary twists.

On second view: I still stand with my initial evaluation.

Maltin **: "Not terribly scary, in spite of insistent bursts of music and loud effects on the soundtrack...but even worse, it's pointless."

(Watch out for Gemma Ward as one of the masked strangers!)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

The former Fellowship of the Ring prepare for the final battle for Middle Earth, while Frodo & Sam approach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring.

Glorious and monumental last installment of the trilogy, marred only by the overlong scenes in the aftermath.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)

Frodo and Sam continue on to Mordor in their mission to destroy the One Ring. Whilst their former companions make new allies and launch an assault on Isengard.

Brilliant mid-part of the fantasy trilogy which especially fascinates with the introduction of the character Gollum.

Censored

Over the years I have experienced so much censorship I have a whole collection of images that were previously unacceptable on MySpace, Photobucket and with all the other advocates of the moral majority.

I've found the case with this photo particularly interesting, since it actually DOES NOT show, what they most fear. You guess...
