Kidnap (2017)

A mother stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son.

Although Halle Berry does as good as she, the kidnapped child is nothing more than a MacGuffin for a feature-length car chase.

X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)

The X-Men send Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

Visually pleasing and action-ridden installment in the X-Men series is unfortunately over-populated with mutants and stuffed with so many sub-plots that it's difficult to comprehend the individual intentions and rivalries.

Maltin***: "Provocative idea is overcome at times by visual bombast, but the ticking-clock structure works well. New mutants in the future segments don't get much to do;..Not quite a bull's-eye, but still highly watchable for devoted fans, who will also cheer a handful of cameos."

X-Men (2000)

Two mutants come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

OK adaptation of a comics classic is slow-paced,  has good emphasis on atmosphere and style and surprisingly doesn't overdo it with the action sequences.

Halliwell (no star): "Stylish comicbook action movie that is one of the few to suggest that some inteeligence is involved, though its attempt to find a connection between its mutants and the Jewish victims of the concentration camps is ill-judged."

Maltin***: "Long on razzle-dazzle, fun to watch, though some energy is sapped away by the climax."

Swordfish (2001)

A secretive renegade counter-terrorist co-opts the world's greatest hacker (who is trying to stay clean) to steal billions in US Government dirty money.

Slick cyber spy thriller with a ridiculously outlandish plot and in the end no better or different than most action thrillers.

Halliwell (no star): "Loud and overwrought action thriller that dispenses with logic and characterisation."

Maltin ** 1/2: "Some terrific post-MATRIX action moments and stunt set pieces are the only saving grace, as it becomes silly and unreasonably far-fetched. Derivation of the title is never fully explained, we'd like to think it's from the Marx Brothers' HORSE FEATHERS."

Executive Decision (1996)

When terrorists seize control of an airliner, an intelligence analyst accompanies a commando unit for a midair boarding operation.

Average action thriller which is interesting for the pre-9/11 terrorist plot to use an airplane to destroy a building.

Perfect Stranger (2007)

A journalist goes undercover to ferret out a businessman as her best friend's killer.

Stars and some budget don't help, if you have an incredibly implausible and even ridiculous plot and on top of that all throughout populated by dislikable people.

Halle Berry

Catwoman (2004)

Halle Berry impersonates the feline villain.

Rumored to be gawdawful I found the movie certainly not particularly great, at least not for a highbrow audience, but it's more rather average entertainment. It has its faults, but after all: it's a movie based on a comic book character.

Vignettes #22

Last night we were watching Catwoman on TV. Early on in the movie there's a scene where a cat climbs out the window and up the outside wall of the building the leading lady Halle Berry - who later becomes Catwoman - lives in.

The cat is stuck and starts meowing for help. This not only upsets Halle Berry: Instantly our cat Mookey came into the room from the dining room where she was napping and started meowing herself.

She was obviously alarmed and quickly looked after her daughter Dooley who was sleeping in the TV room with us and had fully ignored the cat signals from the TV.

After Mookey was assured the little one was OK, she looked up to us, and she was still very worried.

Luckily the scene on TV was over within a few minutes.
