A young girl, with an amazing ability to communicate with insects, is transferred to an exclusive Swiss boarding school, where her unusual capability might help solve a string of murders.

A Dario Argento joint: wildly stylish, incoherent plot with a dreamlike atmosphere and lots of imaginative shock moments, and once again another incongruous soundtrack.

Halliwell (no star): "Daft and gruesome horror that lacks style and sense; it has a plethora of murderers, it is never fully explained who did what to whom, its intentions is to disgust rather than shock, and its heavy-metal soundtrack is a frequent distraction."

Maltin***: "Typically stylish, bizarre Argento horror opus whose premise...serves as a framework for some cleverly weird goings-on...Don't say you weren't warned!" 

 

 

Only the Brave (2017)

Based on the true story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a group of elite firefighters who risk everything to protect a town from a historic wildfire.

Good firefighter tragedy with a solid cast is more focused on the protagonists' personal lives, but also offers some exciting firefighting scenes.

Noah (2014)

Noah is chosen by his world's creator to undertake a momentous mission before an apocalyptic flood cleanses the world.

Idiosyncratic, risky and not fully successful artistic attempt to reinterpret the Biblical Flood narrative; it has great visuals, some moving moments and even suspense, but can also be plain silly - not that far advanced to Cecil B. DeMille's movies.

Maltin***: "Inventive expansion of the biblical tale...Disparate elements don't blend seamlessly - the rock creatures, known as Watchers, seem to come from a Ray Harryhausen picture - but there is much to admire. The building of the ark and the coming of the flood are truly impressive. Crowe has never been better, Hopkins adds an unexpected light touch as Methuselah, and Winstone is a formidable villain."

Above-average neo-noir thriller with an appropriately complex, but comprehensible plot with lots of tough talk and 40s atmosphere.

Mulholland Falls (1996)

The first time I saw this neo noir movie I was quite enthusiastic, but this time over I found it only to be OK. Jennifer Connelly plays the corpse and has some nude scenes on the grainy amateur movies used as evidence in the case.
