Jurassic World (2015)

A new theme park, built on the original site of Jurassic Park, creates a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur, which escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

This sequel to the Jurassic Park series doesn't add much to the formula, but is nevertheless professionally handled entertainment and offers some fun - especially when you're rooting for the dinosaurs.

On rewatching: Enjoyable old-fashioned entertainment with up-to-date special effects.

A musical fantasy about the story of Elton John's breakthrough years.

Well-made musical biography includes both the ups and downs of Elton John's career; the musical bits are good and the performances, especially Taron Egerton's, extraordinary.

50/50 (2011)

Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

It's always a risk to stage the drama of a life-threatening illness and try to spice it with humor, but careful direction and an excellent cast actually help manage to pull it off.

Maltin***: "...this sure-footed film manages to blend comedy and drama with satisfying results. Gordon-Levitt is perfect in the leading role."

The Help (2011)

An aspiring author during the civil rights movement of the 1960s decides to write a book detailing the African-American maids' point of view on the white families for which they work, and the hardships they go through on a daily basis.

Clearly anti-racist, but politically a bit naive period piece, which nevertheless satisfies with a brilliant all-female cast, all at the top of their art.

Maltin***: "Evocative portrayal...The white characters' plight almost seems trivial alongside the life-and-death struggles of the servants, but the performances are rich, especailly Davis, who is heartbreakingly real, and Spencer..."

The Village (2004)

The population of a small, isolated countryside village believe that their alliance with the mysterious creatures that inhabit the forest around them is coming to an end.

A fascinating and debatable premise is competently staged as a Gothic tale.

Maltin *1/2: "Somer, straight-faced story...Evolves into a self-parody at some point before becomimg downright ridiculous. Impressive only as a showcase for newconer Howard (daughter of Ron)."

Unusual and effective period mystery with a great plot twist.
