New Stuff: Prince of the City

Emily Didonato

Detour (2013)

Trapped inside his car by a mudslide, smooth talking Jackson Alder suddenly finds himself in a situation he can't talk his way out of. With no hope of rescue, he must defy the odds; battling Mother Nature for his survival.

Intense, one-room drama makes the best of its limited premise; good TV production.

Moonrise (1948)

Danny is despised by his schoolmates because his father was accused of killing another man and sentenced to death.

Superior Noir melodrama is beautifully made and photographed and takes its dark, seemingly hopeless tale to a tense finale.

Halliwell*: "Broody melodrama set against a remote village and swamp background; not a very interesting story, but memorable detail."

Maltin**1/2: "Uneven script...But it's beautifully directed; check out stunning opening shot, and opening sequence."

French Water (2021)

Fashion Ad About the Superiority of French Water

Star-cast, stylish, fashionable short ad for, of all things, water from France; for Jarmusch completists only (water experts might be annoyed).

Jack Cardiff

A married woman leaves her husband and zooms off on her motorcycle to see her lover.

Artsy and pretentious exploitation movie seems to have been mainly made to show Marianne Faithfull in leather and various stages of undress, plus some psychedelic sequences as a reference to the zeitgeist; nicely photographed, though.

Halliwell (no star): "An incredibly plotless and ill-conceived piece sub-porn claptrap, existing only as a long series of colour supplement photographs."

Maltin**: "Cardiff also photographed this oddity: a mod, psychedelic, existential tale..."
