Ascenseur pour l'échafaud (1958)

A self-assured business man murders his employer, the husband of his mistress, which unintentionally provokes an ill-fated chain of events.

A brilliant homage to Film Noir, this classic also anticpates Nouvelle Vague aesthetics and atmosphere, but just as well functions as morality play (plus a great score by Miles Davis).

Halliwell*: "Complex, watchable suspenser with pretensions."

Maltin***1/2: "Filmed by Henri Decaë on the streets of Paris in a bracing style that anticipates the New Wave."

Les Amants (1958)

Bored with her husband, bored with her polo-playing lover, a middle-aged woman walks away with the young man who gave her a lift that day when her car broke down.

Produced with style and taste and a good cast, this movie may have caused an outrage at the time, but the analysis of bourgeois ennui is very much dated by today's standards.

Halliwell**: "A passionate romance which had some censorship difficulties at the time, this rather gloomy film never quite whirls one away as it should, and it doesn't have the eye for detail of Brief Encounter."

Maltin***: "Chic, once-controversial tale...Malle's first international success, and one of Moreau's most important early credits."

Pretty Baby (1978)

A pre-teen girl grows up in a house of prostitution in the Storyville section of New Orleans in 1917.

Inspired by the historic photos of Ernest J. Bellocq this otherwise lightheartedly told movie caused a scandal in its depiction of child pornography and to this day is mostly available only censored.
