Morgan (2016)

A corporate risk-management consultant must decide whether or not to terminate an artificially created humanoid being.

Above-average, well cast sci-fi drama delivers some shocks  with the android's irrational and violent behaviour; the twist ending, however, is is rather predictable.

LBJ (2016)

Lyndon B. Johnson aligns himself with John F. Kennedy, rises to the Presidency, and deals with the civil rights struggles of the 1960s.

Straight and professionally made, but a bit adulatory biopic focussed on LBJ's political transition as John F. Kennedy's Vice President and successor; it could have been so much more, although it is indeed a treat to watch Woody Harrelson give this politician some life.

Annihilation (2018)

A biologist signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition into a mysterious zone where the laws of nature don't apply.

Visually brilliant sci-fi mystery with a bleak atmosphere and a complex ending, but a bit short on character development.

The Hudsucker Proxy (1994)

A naive business graduate is installed as president of a manufacturing company as part of a stock scam.

Coen Brothers' likable and entertaining homage to the good old days of cinema is a mixture of screwball comedy, newspaper movie and social satire; this time told more straighforward than usual.

Halliwell**: "Clever and enjoyable pastiche of Hollywood comedies of the 40s, close in spirit to Preston Sturges and an ending straight out of Frank Capra. It is stylzed, stylish and civilized entertainment."

Maltin***: "The Coen brothers' most extravagant creation to date, an eye-popping '50s fantasy of big business gone berserk, with Robbins absolutely perfect as the wide-eyed patsy who miraculously rises to the top. Newman is a crafty villain, and Leigh is fun (if a bit one-note) as a fast-talking, Kate Hepburn-ish reporter."

Backdraft (1991)

Two Chicago firefighter brothers who don't get along have to work together while a dangerous arsonist is on the loose.

Over-average drama due to great cast and competent directing.

The Hitcher (1986)

A young man who escaped the clutches of a murderous hitch-hiker is subsequently stalked, framed for the hitcher's crimes, and has his life made into hell by the same man he escaped.

Above average road movie thriller with an especially convincing Rutger Hauer as the psychopathic drifter.

Unfortunately, the German censors overdid their job as so often; there is literally hardly any murder to be seen in their version.
