The Double (2011)

A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

Run-of-the-mill spy thriller with at least one twist too many; only fairly entertaining.

Maltin BOMB: "Awkward, amateurish, sometimes laughable thriller is bad from the word "go", clearly not filmed where it takes place...Inauspicious directing debut..."

Nothing Sacred (1937)

An eccentric woman learns she is not dying of radium poisoning as earlier assumed, but when she meets a reporter looking for a story, she feigns sickness again for her own profit.

Lively and mildly amusing satire is quite dated, but watchable for its wit, fast pace and good cast.

Halliwell***: "Hollywood's most bitter and hilarious satire, with crazy comedy elements and superb wisecracks; a historical monument of screen comedy, though its freshness at the time can't now be recaptured."

Maltin***1/2: "Classic comedy...Ben Hecht's cynical script vividly enacted by March and Lombard (at her best)."

American Epic (2015)

At the height of the Roaring Twenties, music scouts set out across America to capture the breadth of American music and discovered the artists that would shape our world.

Fascinating and insightful historical investigation into the roots of American popular music dicsovers some good archive material; the final episode, The American Epic Sessions recreates the recordings on the same recording machine from the time performed by some good current musicians and pop stars.

Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich (2020)

Survivors worldwide reveal the manipulation, abuse and emotional scars suffered at the hands of wealthy convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Their stories expose a sex trafficking ring of powerful enablers leading up to his 2019 arrest.

This documentary series gives a good and extensive overview about Epstein, his cronies and the crimes committed , but not much more insight than one could have arrived at by regularly watching the case in the news.

It Comes at Night (2017)

Secure within a desolate home as an unnatural threat terrorizes the world, a man has established a tenuous domestic order with his wife and son. Then a desperate young family arrives seeking refuge.

Dark and effective post-apocalyptic drama is more focused on the psychological repercussions of a (vaguely sketched) catastrophe than on any horror tropes; although a strong effort, its elliptical tale-telling does diminish its impact.
