Side Effects (2013)

A young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.

A highly convoluted mystery with multiple twists somehow works with its excellent performances and intelligent direction.

On rewatching: Still good for a second viewing, well-made in all departments.

Maltin***: "Intriguing film noir-type story...with modern pharmaceutical twist keeps you guessing right to the end, although its characters are not especially fun to spend time with."

Gerald's Game (2017)

While trying to spice up their marriage in their remote lake house, Jessie must fight to survive when her husband dies unexpectedly, leaving her handcuffed to their bed frame.

Well-made, imaginative psycho-thriller delivers the goods with some twists, but is mainly watchable for Carla Gugino's appropriate performance.

Hush (2016)

A deaf and mute writer who retreated into the woods to live a solitary life must fight for her life in silence when a masked killer appears at her window.

Well-made slasher movie with a good cast is suspenseful and delivers some shocks, but it is not a particularly original take on this genre.

The Ritual (2017)

A group of college friends reunite for a trip to the forest, but encounter a menacing presence in the woods that's stalking them.

Above-average horror tale makes good use of the Scandinavian landscape with a good cast of characters, but, buy and large, it's all quite derivative and nothing new to the genre.

The Blood Beast Terror (1968)

A scientist, working with genetics, creates a creature that is capable of transforming back and forth between a giant Death Head moth and a beautiful woman.

Quite silly - and mediocre - horror yarn; the creature is especially risible.

Halliwell (no star): "Unpersuasive and totally idiotic cheapjack horror fare."
