La sirène du Mississipi (1969)

A wealthy plantation owner is captivated by a mysterious woman with a shady past.

Offbeat Noir thriller treated more like a l'amour fou romance with some typical Truffaut touches, occasionally a bit heavy-handed and with some risible dialogue.

On rewatching: Lively drama omits the novel's noir elements and turns the story into an almost surreal romance;the director and his two stars somehow make it work.

Halliwell*: "Oddly obsessive romantic murder mystery; the hero continues to love the girl who tries to kill him, and at the end they are still together. Interesting when it is not uncomfortable."

Maltin***: "One of the director's few flops, but any film with Belmondo-Deneuve-Truffaut combo is of interest...Always buy brand names."

Hitchcock/Truffaut (2015)

Filmmakers discuss how Francois Truffaut's 1966 book "Cinema According to Hitchcock" influenced their work.

This documentary provides not much new about the famous book and the two directors, but you'll find more insight from the invited guest directors.

Tirez sur le pianiste (1960)

A washed-up classical pianist bottoms out after his wife's suicide — stroking the keys in a Parisian bar and, when his brothers get in trouble with gangsters, he inadvertently gets dragged into the chaos and is forced to rejoin the family he once fled.

Wonderfully playful and at times surreal and absurdist take on Film Noir that enthuses by its esprit and sheer joy of taking a plot wherever it may go.

Halliwell*: "Fair copy of an American film noir, not especially interesting except for its sharp observation."

Maltin****: "Atmospheric early Truffaut gem...This film, more than any other, reflects the influence of Hollywood low-budget melodramas on Truffaut and his cinematic style."

Antoine et Colette (1962)

After indulging in much delinquency in his youth, seventeen year old Antoine Doinel, having been provided opportunity to get out of that delinquent life, is now an upstanding member of society working for Philips Records, which allows him to indulge in his love of music.

Truffaut's contribution to the omnibus film L'amour à vingt ans is Truffaut's first congenial continuation of his Doinel saga and manages to tell a gripping story of love forlorn in half an hour.
