La Grande illusion (1937)

During the First World War, two French soldiers are captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp. Several escape attempts follow until they are sent to a seemingly impenetrable fortress which seems impossible to escape from.

Paradigmatic war drama, rightfully considered a classic, impeccably directed with a stellar cast.

Maltin****: "Renoir's classic treatise on war...Beautiful performances enhance an eloquent script."

Eric Rohmer discusses Louis Lumière's films with Jean Renoir and Henri Langlois.

This is a wonderful documentary with two relaxed experts and lots of clips of Lumière's films.

All in all perfect and done with Renoir's light hand, but to me it was too light-weighted (and self-conscious) to be fully entertaining.
