The Lady from Shanghai (1947)

Fascinated by a beautiful woman, a seaman joins a bizarre yachting cruise, and ends up mired in a complex murder plot.

Brilliant Noir fantasy with excellent Expressionist  photography and a tongue-in cheek twisted plot.

Halliwell**: "Absurd, unintelligible, plainly much cut and rearranged, this thriller was obviously left too much in Welles's hands and then just as unfairly taken out of them; but whole sequences of sheer brilliance remain, notably the final shoot-out in the hall of mirrors."

Maltin***: "The camera's the star of this offbeat thriller, with the cast incidental in murder mystery...The famous hall of mirrors climax is riveting."

Salome (1953)

 

In the reign of emperor Tiberius, Gallilean prophet John the Baptist preaches against King Herod and Queen Herodias.

Technicolor biblical nonsense freely re-interpreting the whole Salome story..

The Strawberry Blonde (1941)

A young man is crazy about a 'strawberry blonde' girl, but his "pal" marries her himself and makes his friend the fall guy for his shady dealings.

A wonderful movie, a favourite of mine, but not a comedy as the German TV mag wants us to believe. All done perfectly by everybody involved this is a good-natured moral tale telling us that beauty and wealth do not always bring happiness.

Gilda (1946)

I know this is a classic and rightfully so, but still: I've always had problems with this movie. It's not just Glenn Ford who I never particularly liked.

First and foremost this is about a case of pathological jealousy. The cruelties Glenn Ford inflicts onto Rita Hayworth know no bounds, at times I find his behaviour sheer unbearable. The supposed 'cruelties' she inflicts on him nurturing his jealousy are in the end all fake! So, the only 'bad guy' in this movie is Glenn Ford himself.

The most disconcerting part of this movie is the pop-goes-the weasel happy ending is liked glued on. Not only is Ford 'cured' and repents, he doesn't even get prosecuted for the crimes he committed...Gilda is a sadomasochistic fairy tale.
