Unabashedly pretentious exercise that takes a true crime case as an excuse to doodle about fact and fiction, the tagline sums it up perfectly: "Forget the truth, find the story"; the good cast does their best with their invidious roles, though.

Contraband (2012)
To protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord, a former smuggler heads to Panama to score millions of dollars in counterfeit bills.
Thanks to intelligent direction and a competent cast this thriller with a simple premise turns to become ever more so complicated and the supsense never lets off.
Maltin**: "A good caper film should be light on its feet, but this one has a heavy tread; what's more, the characters are singularly unappealing."

Whiteout (2009)
A U.S. Marshal tracks a killer in Antarctica, as the sun is about to set for six months.
Mediocre crime mystery in an unusual setting, but with an uninteresting plot and a disappointing ending.
Maltin **: "Good-looking but paper-thin thriller...Even though her character is constantly in danger, Beckinsale is always perfectly coiffed; early on, she even peels off her clothes and takes a steamy shower. Only in the movies..."

Laurel Canyon (2002)
When an uptight young man and his fiancee move into his libertine mother's house, the resulting clash of life attitudes shakes everyone up.
Basically OK and well-played character drama about the uninteresting problems of people you wouldn't want to meet.
Halliwell (no stars): "A generational clash a middle-aged leather-clad hippie and her conservative son degenerates into standard soap opera fare."
Maltin **1/2: "Superficial but diverting hijinks with an unattractive cast, and McDormand in a role unlike any she's done before. Follows the same pattern as Cholodenko's previous, more richly textured film, HIGH ART."

A young married couple becomes stranded at an isolated motel and finds hidden video cameras in their room, and they realize that unless they escape, they'll be the next victims of a snuff film.
Well-made, but basically standard horror fare.
