Solomon Kane (2009)
A ruthless mercenary renounces violence after learning his soul is bound for hell, but when a young girl is kidnapped and her family slain by a sorcerer's murderous cult, he is forced to fight and seek his redemption slaying evil.
Visually stark and bleak fantasy drama within a medieval setting, but marred by pseudo-Christian ideology.
Maltin**1/2: "Good-looking, intelligent swashbuckler/horror movie with Purefoy very good as Robert E. Howard's dour pilgrim-knight."
In the Bedroom (2001)
A New England couple's college-aged son dates an older woman who has two small children and an unwelcome ex-husband.
Slow-paced and subtle crime drama that keeps its focus on the elderly couple's grief than on the actual murder of their son.
Halliwell**: "Compelling drama of marital tensions at breaking point, of prents who have invested their future in their only child; but the violent ending vitiates all that has gone before."
Maltin***: "Quiet, observant film explores how grief effects a longtime married couple and the people around them. Rock-solid performances by all the lead actors."
