New Stuff: Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven

I must admit that the name of Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven was new to me, a dazzling Dada artist. And this biography seems to be a quite thorough work, beautiful volume, too.

First Lines: Daniel Defoe - The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe

(illustration: Offterdinger & Zweigle)

I was born in the Year 1632, in the City of York, of a good Family, tho' not of that Country, my Father being a Foreigner of Bremen, who settled first at Hull: He got a good Estate by Merchandise, and leaving off his Trade, lived afterward at York, from whence he had married my Mother, Relations were named Robinson, a very good Family at Country, and from whom I was called Robinson Keutznaer; but by the usual Corruption of Words in England, we are now called, nay we call our Selves, and writer Name Crusoe, and so my Companions always call'd me.

New Stuff: L'Enfer

This is an umcompleted movie by Henri-Georges Clouzot, but from which 15 hours of film material were discovered revealing that this may have been a masterpiece. Claude Chabrol would later realize his own version of the script. This DVD edition also includes a documentary on the movie and Clouzot's last movie, La prisonnière.

New Stuff: The Wire

It's always a wonderful experience to get a new edition of The Wire, and this time it's got a large array of names I've never heard of before. Each edition there's something new to learn.
