The Shipping News (2001)

An emotionally-beaten man with his young daughter moves to his ancestral home in Newfoundland to reclaim his life.

Solid adaptation of a popular novel with a great cast that has its merits in several set pieces but not quite as a whole.

Halliwell (no star): "Weakly-told, sentimental fable that has all the depth and interest of a small puddle."

Maltin***: "An unbeatable cast brings this sympathetic adaptation of  E. Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to life; the setting contributes as much as the actors."
