The Caine Mutiny (1954)

When a US Naval captain shows signs of mental instability that jeopardizes the ship, the first officer relieves him of command and faces court martial for mutiny.

A psychological drama at sea - highly effective and with a great performance by Humphrey Bogart, but the movie's message is a bit dubious.

Halliwell**: "Decent if lamely paced version of a bestseller, which also made a successful play; the film skates too lightly over the characterizations and even skimps the courtroom scene, but there are effective scenes and performances."

Maltin****: "...exciting adaptation (by Stanley Roberts) of Herman Wouk's Pulitzer Prize novel. Wartime mutiny scene during typhoon still packs a wallop."
