Zwartboek (2006)

aka

Black Book Germany / International (English title) / Italy / UK / USA

In the Nazi-occupied Netherlands during World War II, a Jewish singer infiltrates the regional Gestapo headquarters for the Dutch resistance.

Very professionally made and highly entertaining, this movie is rather more a Hollywood-style historical thriller than a serious depiction of occupied Holland during WWII.

I really, really, really love this movie. Yeah, it's slick and stylish, proving that Verhoeven's years in Hollywood rubbed off on him, but I wouldn't say that prevents it from being serious. The film deals with some fairly weighty material, including the post-war problem of sorting out collaborators from resistance fighters and ordinary citizens, and of course the ways in which sexuality plays into these political situations. Plus, it's just a blast to watch from beginning to end, even during the later scenes that can be pretty hard to deal with.

I understand your point, Ed, and it's really very watchable, but there were so many surprise twists in the plot, you could really sense how calculated the impact on the audience was.

I was thinking of Ang Lee's Lust, Caution that had a similar story, but in my opinion delved much deeper into the moral implications.
