William S. Burroughs: The Cat Inside

One day at the Stone House, before any of the cats had come to live indoors, I was shooting out in the barn and I looked up and there atop the woodpile behind my target was the little white kitten. I holster my shooting iron and walk over slow, and now I can see the mother cat there on top of the woodpile with three little kittens around her. She sashays over to me and lays her head in my hand.
"I can see you're a good man, Sheriff. Take care of me and my babies."
It was very touching, the simplicity of the gesture. Thousands of years of female cats in that gesture, and the babies behind her: "This is my creation...all I can do...what I have to do."
