Atonement (2007)

A fledgling writer, as a 13-year-old, irrevocably changes the course of several lives when she accuses her older sister's lover of a crime he did not commit.

The movie does very well depict the tone and the intentions of the novel: the actors are good, the production value is excellent, and it has Keira Knightley in it.

On second view I still agree with my first assessment.

Maltin **: "Handsome but portentous adaptation of Iam McEwan's novel (by Christopher Hampton) never delivers the emotional impact it should, given its intriguing premise."
