Scientists in the Antarctic are confronted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of the people that it kills.
Basically an extensive showcase for the special effects team creating a till then unknown amount of surreal gore which soon proved to become quite influential.
Halliwell (no star): "A remake using the basis of the original story (the thing conceals itself within each of the characters in turn) but filled with revolting detail which alienated many audiences."
Maltin*1/2: "More faithful to the original story, but nonstop parade of slimy, repulsive special effects turns this into a freak show and drowns most of the suspense."
