Harry Angel is a private investigator who is hired by a man who calls himself Louis Cyphre to track down a singer called Johnny Favorite.
Although this movie has high production qualities and excellent New Noir photography the plot is as silly as it can get.
Halliwell*: "He does [descend into Hell], literally, in pursuit of a missing person who's opted out of a pact with the devil. Thoroughly unpleasant in detail, this wallow in the private eye cult constantly takes the eye with its pictorial qualities, even at its most nauseating."
Maltin**1/2: "An American Gothic yarn, full of striking, sensual, and frightening images, though after a while, it bogs down. Intriguing, if not terribly appealing."
