City by the Sea (2002)

A police officer whose father was executed for a 1950s kidnapping of a child sees his own son become a murderer.

Solid cop thriller turned family drama with some good performances, but not particularly exciting.

Halliwell (no star): "Despite being based on a true story, this talky, dowbeat drama rarely rings true. The role of veteran cop fits De Niro like a well-worn overcoat, but there's nothing out of the ordinary for either star or audience."

Maltin**: "Dreary, derivative saga...Tries to paint a tragic saga of fathers, sons, and lost opportunities, but too often rings hollow."
