Despite production value and and some good performances this is a messy and pretentious effort to make a surrealist statement about art at the turn of the century.
Maltin*1/2: "Gorgeous but faux-artsy biopic...Pretentious, factually questionable, and annoyingly hallucinatory, elevated only by the luminous paintings and abundant nudity. A somnolent Malkovich makes not the slightest effort to sound anything but pure Illinoisan."
