Contact (1997)

A scientist, after years of searching, finds conclusive radio proof of intelligent aliens, who send plans for a mysterious machine.

Mesmerizing sci-fi drama about the first contact that in the end delivers the goods, but gets a bit kitshy as well.

Halliwell*: "After a brilliant beginning, an awe-inspiring journey through space, the film soon settles for sentimentality and psychobabble, being less interested in the consequences of the possibilities of alien contact than in self-help and exploring one's inner being."

Maltin***: "Intensely involving story in which we're drawn into Foster's obsesion and share her odyssey into the unknown. Passionate and intelligent, this film manages to inspire a feeling of awe and wonder, which makes up for its overlength and false endings. Foster is simply sensational."
