The Shining (1980)

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where an evil and spiritual presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from the past and of the future.

A horror film classic, impeccably staged  and acted and full of ingenious ambiguities and nuances despite steamrolling to a frenzied climax.

Halliwell*: "Uninteresting ghost story sparked by meticulous detail and sets but finally vitiated by overlength and an absurdly over-the-top star performance."

Maltin**: "Intriguing but ineffectual adaptation...Nicholson goes off the wall so quickly there's no time to get involved in his plight. Some eerie scenes, to be sure, but the film goes on forever."

[Nota bene: I saw the European version of less than 2 hours which is hardly overlong. I'll be getting the 30 minutes longer US version and check with this review.]
