I had heard Khmer Rouge decades ago on the Bavarian radio show Zündfunk, but never saw any releases by the band. Only recently did I find out that it had been an early project of Phil Shoenfelt who today lives in Prague and still active under his own name. Khmer Rouge, founded in New York in 1979, were a post-punk band strongly influenced by the New York No Wave scene. There’s not much information to be found about the band other than Phil Shoenfelt’s own recollections on his homepage. 2005 a collection of their music was relased as Khmer Rouge New - London 1981-86 and Phil says on hearing the newly mastered songs: “…I was pleasantly surprised that Khmer Rouge’s output still sounds fresh and vital. While it is definitely of its time, there is a spark and an intensity that seems to reach across the years, and much of what we were singing about sounds as relevant today (maybe even more so), than it did in the early eighties.”
