The Magnificent Ambersons (1942)

The spoiled young heir to the decaying Amberson fortune comes between his widowed mother and the man she has always loved.

Excellent direction, cinematography and storytelling (despite being drastically cut); however, there are at least two unnerving performances among an otherwise stellar cast.

Halliwell****: "Fascinating period drama told in brilliant cinematic snippets; owing to studio interference the last reels are weak, but the whole is a treat for connoisseurs, and a delight in its fast-moving control of cinematic narrative."

Maltin****: "Brilliant drama...Welles' follow-up to CITIZEN KANE is equally exciting in its own way, though film was taken out of his hands, recut and reshot by others."
