Concert: Savina Yannatou & Barry Guy

The renown bassist and composer Barry Guy collaborated with the Greek voice virtuoso Savina Yannatou and performed a free concert at the Wels church Minoriten as part of the Unlimited 28 festival. A few moments into the first tune I feared a hard-to-digest tour de force of prim avantgarde music, but very soon the dialogic form of the performance made full sense to me and I was able to follow the otherwise difficult music quite easily. Barry Guy is a very obvious master on the contrabass who manages to create previously unheard of tones from the instrument and Savina Yannatou is indeed a virtuoso using her incredibly versatile voice as an instrument. It is a sign of the success of this performance that the audience felt the same way I did and enthusiastically called for more. Finally, the short, funny, quick male-female quarrel as encore proved that this music was indeed created with joy and enthusiasm by the two musicians.
