Concert: Till by Turning

The Thing with Mats Gustafsson and Ken Vandermark were the main reaon I visited the Unlimited 28 festival in Wels, Austria- and I wasn't disappointed, for sure. But Till by Turning were to me the highlight of the 6 concerts of that day. They were announced as a chamber music ensemble and that was quite accurate, but a bit incomplete considering the diversity of compositions presented, in part interpretations of other composers (like the still controversially received For Aaron Copland by Morton Feldman) and their own compositions and improvisational pieces. The trio's performance was at times so fragile that you could have heard a needle drop (and unfortunately you did hear outside noise, especially from the bar), but then expanded into a broader spectrum of musical colors with the bassoonist's powerful improvisation on the verge of noise and the beauty of the textures in the final compostiion. I know for certain that I'll be purchasing any recordings this wonderful ensemble will be releasing.
